King
King, NC was originally named "King’s Cabin" after a Quaker family’s cabin that was frequently used as a landmark for giving directions. When the post office opened in 1888, it was named after that reference point and as the town grew and more businesses arrived, the name was truncated to King.
Rural Hall
This quaint town was originally settled by German American Revolutionary war veterans, one of whom was Anthony Bitting whose descendant Benjamin L. Bitting operated a post office from his home that included a rather wide hall known to the locals as "The Hall" from which Rural Hall got its name.
Tobaccoville
This beautiful village of Tobaccoville was named after a chewing tobacco factory that operated back in the 19th century. The Orrender Tobacco Factory served as a landmark in the area, and when the post office opened, it was named Tobaccoville, hence the name today.
Pfafftown
This town’s name can be attributed to Peter Pfaff who owned a farm in the area and raised his family on it with his wife Anna Barbara Hartung Pfaff. They were a prominent family due to his involvement with the community and having held two public offices. When the town received its post office in 1888, the postal location and town was named Pfafftown.
Lewisville
This town was born from settlers travelling along the Great Wagon Road to get out west. On their journey it was common for folks to stop at night on the banks of the Yadkin River before crossing the Shallow Ford. A community stemmed from these stops when Moravian settlers arrived, one of whom was Lewis Laugenour who donated land to develop the town.
Pinnacle
This town was originally named Culler in honor of Emanuel W. Culler who built a railroad station on land he owned in Pinnacle (then Culler), hence bringing train travel to the residents of the area. In the early 20th century the name was changed to Pinnacle in honor of the natural beauty of the Big Pinnacle on Pilot Mountain.
